GET RID OF THAT POT BELLY!
Most people grow pot bellies
gradually without even noticing this. Experts agree that they are mostly caused
by accumulation of fat around the abdominal area. This does not rule out
medical causes, such as gastroparesis. Gastroparesis is a medical condition in
which partial paralysis of the stomach muscles results in delayed emptying into
the small intestine and as such, food stays in the stomach longer than normal.
Pot bellies are essentially
the result of poor feeding habits or choosing the wrong types of food. Yet,
nobody grows a pot belly overnight. It happens gradually. If you are already
having substantial fat around that part of the body or wish to prevent it, you
will have to note the following:
Lean proteins have been identified
as essential to burning up the fat around the abdomen. They help to keep the
body's blood sugar stable by making one feel fuller, boosting the energy, and
helping to burn more belly fat. Good lean protein choices are lean meat,
low-fat dairy products, beans and fruits.
For a healthy weight loss,
you need to eat large amounts of fresh, raw fruits and vegetables everyday.
High-fibre or 'watery' foods
are the best carbohydrates one can have. The body processes them easily and
they provide all the nutrients one needs to lose fat.
Avoid most processed foods
such as snacks, candies and sodas.
Soft drinks contain
low-quality calories and should be avoided.
It is advisable to eat
whole-grain bread instead of white bread. The same goes for pasta, cereal, and
other baked foods. The grilled or baked version of meat should be preferred over
fried.
TIPS TO REDUCE POT BELLY
1. Have dinner at least two
hours before going to bed.
2. Do exercise regularly.
Walk as much as you can or meet a fitness specialist to find an exercise that
suits you.
3. Minimize fatty foods
intake, especially fried foods.
4. Drink eight to ten glasses
of water a day.
5. Add plenty of salad,
fruits and whole grains to your diet.
6. Reduce your consumption of
alcoholic drinks.
7. Develop a proper posture.
Stand erect, sit straight and avoid slouching.
8. Avoid high consumption of
carbohydrates at dinner time. This is the period when the human body is at rest
and less active.
9. Along with regular
exercise, taking a steam bath does help to some extent.
10. Eat frequently, but in
moderation - eat several small, balanced meals and snacks per day. Fruits and
nuts are better examples of snacks, compared to biscuits, meatpies and other
forms of pastry.
Though often miscontrued as a
sign of wealth in some Nigerian cultures, a "pot belly" is something
you can actually do without. And if the need ever arises, your bank account can
reveal your true financial status!
